There is no biological foundation to the idea that humans can be divided into different “races.” And yet, ideas about race are extremely important to understanding American society. Undeniable patterns of health, wealth, life, and death are all powerfully correlated to “race.” If “race” has no biological basis, then what basis does it have? Why is it so important in American society generation after generation?
