Whatever the outcome of the British referendum on EU membership, the crisis of the EU will continue, most obviously in relation to the Euro and mass migration. Socialists should welcome this, as the history of the EU demonstrates that it is not in any sense a friend of the working class, but a structurally undemocratic institution which is inherently racist to those outside its borders. This talk will argue that, instead of pretending that the EU can be reformed, the Left should seek to seize the initiative from its right-wing populist opponents by building cross-border solidarity from below.
