As protests raged over the past year in Ferguson and Baltimore the burning of the Quick Trip and the uprising in Baltimore raised much discussion in the corporate media about a supposed distinction between "good protesters" who were nonviolent and "bad protesters" who were not. Though an utterly divisive distinction it raised questions about the relationship of violence to social change. This talk will explore that relationship and look at the role of violence in changing society from riots to revolutions.
